Classify & screen

When an ECR is submitted, the coordinator reviews it to determine the correct path forward. This screening step prevents unnecessary CCB meetings for minor changes and fast-tracks emergencies.

Open a submitted ECR and click Start review to move it to Under Review status. This signals to the organisation that you are actively screening the request.

The classification field determines the review path:

ClassificationMeaningTypical review path
EmergencySafety risk, production stoppage, or regulatory deadlineFast-track — coordinator can approve directly
MajorSignificant scope, cost, or cross-department impactEscalate to CCB
MinorLow risk, limited scope, single departmentCoordinator approves directly (unless ccb_required_for_minor is enabled)

As coordinator, you have three options during screening. The decision panel appears in the right sidebar.

For minor changes or emergencies where CCB review would cause unnecessary delay. Select Approved, assign a coordinator for the resulting EC, and confirm. An Engineering Change is created automatically with the ECR data carried over.

For major changes that require board-level approval. Click Escalate to CCB to move the ECR to CCB Review status. CCB members will see the ECR in their review queue.

If the change is not justified or already addressed. Select Rejected and provide a rationale — this is mandatory. The ECR creator receives an email with the rejection reason and can choose to accept the rejection or edit and resubmit.

During screening, you can manage preliminary action items — early tasks that should start before the full ECO process:

  • Template-driven — preliminary actions auto-load based on the change type (configurable in Settings → Action Templates)
  • Manual — add custom preliminary actions as needed
  • AI suggestions — click Suggest actions to get AI-generated recommendations based on the ECR context
  • Include / exclude — toggle individual actions on or off without deleting them

Preliminary actions carry over to the Engineering Change when the ECR is approved.

If a different coordinator should own this ECR, use the coordinator dropdown to reassign.

Every status change, field edit, and decision is recorded in the ECR timeline. Click the Timeline tab to see the full audit trail with timestamps and user names.
